In my opinion police officers are very undereducated about everything other than what the law is. We should require a higher level of education to be a law enforcement officer. I grew up with a brother with paranoid schizophrenia. One time he took a sling blade after my mother. Nearly cut her left leg off. 911 had to be called. The police arrived and took him to the hospital. No one ever drew a gun. They took him to the local hospital, then transported him to Broughton. This scares me!! What are we to do with young or older people in the throes of a mental illness crisis? It’s a real problem today!! Very few people or families can afford the qualified care it takes in normalizing everyone only goes so far!! I feel for the families struggling to care for these difficult situations with little help from the communities… We don’t call the police, we call on other families with autism kiddos, who can help de escalate the situation, who have been in this situation before.. too scary to call for help these days. My cousin is on the spectrum. When he was 15 he wanted to be a police officer. One day he was talking to an officer at a restaurant and he tried to take the officers gun so he could “pretend to be an officer”. We were SO FORTUNATE that the officer didn’t freak out. He swatted my cousin hand away and scolded him. After, the officer told us that his wife is a special education teacher so he recognized that my cousin had autism. But how many officers would recognize autism and react so calmly? So so fortunate. Officers need more autism training.
